The new record for fastest land-bound vehicle on planet Earth.

10:55 February 26, 2011

The building process has begun on a car that aims to set the new record for fastest land-bound vehicle on planet Earth. And no, it’s not a Bugatti.

Known as the Bloodhound, the car seeks to hit a top speed of 1,000 miles per hour when it’s completed. To those of you who don’t follow the world of land-speed record vehicles closely, that goal may seem nigh-on impossible, until you discover what’s powering this (hopefully) land-locked missile—a Eurofighter Typhoon’s EJ200 turbofan engine that blasts out around 18,000 pounds of thrust and a hybrid solid/liquid fuel rocket that punches out another 12 tons of forward movement.

The Bloodhound was designed in part by Richard Noble, mastermind of the Thrust SSC, which currently holds the land-speed record for a 763 mph run in Nevada back in 1997; among those involved in the car’s birth are aerospace companies Lockheed Martin and Hampson Industries. Parts for the car are just starting to be built this week, with the Bloodhound gang hoping to start testing the car early next year. The hopefully-record-breaking run should come sometime in late 2012 or early 2013.
